Spear / FAQs

Young People

What happens on Spear?

You’ll be in a group with around 15 other people who are in a similar situation to you. The programme is run by friendly, experienced coaches who will encourage and help you to develop. They provide help and training in the skills you need to get a job, such as interview practice, CV writing, how to speak professionally and how to present yourself well. You’ll also get access to job opportunities. Find out more.

What’s different about Spear?

We believe that everyone can overcome whatever barriers they face to succeed. People with low confidence, mental health problems, a criminal record or no qualifications have overcome these barriers to get into meaningful work and build a career. Read some of our case studies here.

Who can join Spear?

Spear is designed for 16 to 24-year-olds who are not in education, employment or training. You need to be available Monday to Friday, 2pm – 5pm for six weeks, and be able to travel to one of our centres. Sign up here.

Can you guarantee that I’ll get a job?

Three out of four of those who complete the initial six weeks of Spear not only get into work or further training, but are also there a year later, so you stand a good chance. Find out more.

What kinds of jobs do people do after Spear?

Those who complete Spear go into a variety of jobs, from customer service, business admin, construction to a range of apprenticeships. Others go back to college or on to university. Once you’ve got a job our coaches keep in touch with you for a year to help you think about the next steps in your career. Look at some of our success stories here.

I’d like to work on the Spear programme – what opportunities are available?

We employ paid, full-time Spear coaches to run the programme at each centre. We also have head office support roles. Resurgo, the charity that runs Spear, was listed as one of the UK’s Best Workplaces in 2016. See our current vacancies.

There are also opportunities to volunteer on Spear, or to get involved in other ways, for example through fundraising or involving your business. Find out more.

What opportunities are there for volunteers?

Volunteers from the local community are vital to Spear and can involve mock interviewing a young person for a job they have already applied for, speaking on a panel about your industry or business or supporting us through your company. Find out more.
